ESB has announced that, due to requests received by the power plant, it is extending free tours to the public. The tours of Cathaleen’s Fall Generation Station, part of the Erne Hydro Electric Scheme, which were originally made available to schools, will now open to the public throughout May and June.
Offering a fascinating and educational insight into the generation of electricity on the Erne waterway and its catchment, the tours of the plant can be arranged by booking on line at http://www.esb.ie/main/education/cathaleens-fall-tours.jsp
Tour guides will bring visitors on an enlightening journey through Cathaleen’s Fall exhibition centre hosted in the impressive art-deco entrance of the station building, describing the history behind the generation of electricity there dating back to the 1940s.
Speaking about the tours, Sinead Treanor, Manager at the plant, said, “since announcing the school tours we have had inquiries asking about the possibility of public tours so we are delighted to meet those requests now by opening our doors wider, especially in this, the 65th year of Cathaleen’s Fall commissioning. The tours taken by schools to date have been very well received and we have had great feedback, there is certainly much to see and learn.
“Architecturally the building is of great interest with the original art-deco design having its own attractions. In the control room guides can illustrate very clearly how the generation of electricity has developed over the plant’s history and will explain to visitors the social and economic impact the plant has on the local area.”
Tours will be available until 26th June from Tuesday to Friday between 10am and 3.30pm. Booking is essential and tour groups must remain under the supervision of group leaders at all times.
