Two local charities are celebrating their good fortune at the races this week after winning £4,000 from McLean’s Bookmakers following a series of successful charity bets placed on their behalf by racing experts including AP McCoy.
St Vincent De Paul and The Hub BT80, both based in Cookstown, were given a number of free £100 charity bets by McLean’s Bookmakers during the Cheltenham Festival earlier this year.
The bets were placed on behalf of the charities by a panel of racing experts including AP McCoy, trainer John ‘Shark’ Hanlon, TV personality Pamela Ballantine and pundit Adrian Logan at a McLean’s Cheltenham preview event at Cookstown’s Glenavon House Hotel. The total winnings stand at £4,000 and the money will be divided evenly between the two charities.
Paul McLean from McLean’s Bookmakers said: “We wanted to do something a little different to help raise money for local causes and saw Cheltenham as a perfect opportunity to use our experts to generate some cash through the free bets.
“St Vincent De Paul and The Hub BT80 do some tremendous work in Cookstown and the surrounding area and I’m delighted to present them with their winnings.”
St Vincent De Paul is dedicated to combatting poverty in the local community through assistance including food, heat, clothing and advice on debt relief and money management. Commenting from St Vincent De Paul, Denis Loughrey said: “It’s not every day that you get a legend like AP McCoy picking winners on your behalf and I’d like to thank everyone at McLean’s Bookmakers for their generous donation which will enable us to continue to support the vulnerable and those who are struggling.”
The Hub BT80 is a venue centred around the local community and provides access to drama, arts, crafts and music for all the people of Cookstown to make them feel like they belong. Carol Doey from the charity commented: “We are absolutely thrilled to receive this money – donations like this mean we can continue to make a positive impact on the lives of people from Cookstown for years to come.”
