Diageo Northern Ireland has announced a new partnership with the Clipper 11-12 International Yacht Race which will make its homecoming leg from Nova Scotia to Derry~Londonderry at the beginning of July.

The leading global drinks company is making a significant investment in the North West to support the growth of visitor numbers with a view to developing a lasting tourism legacy throughout, and beyond,  Derry~Londonderry’s  UK City of Culture year in 2013.

The 10 day Clipper Homecoming Festival, organised by Derry City Council, takes place from Friday 29th June to Sunday 8th July and will see a host of international visitors arrive on the shores of the Lough Foyle after their year long transatlantic race.

The Maritime Festival will welcome the clipper fleet which started in Southampton in July last year and feature a series of events including two free concerts showcasing a range of local and international acts. Ten pubs will each host one of the countries involved to celebrate the visit of the world’s longest race and Diageo will have exclusive pouring rights to the event including its home grown global brands Guinness, Harp, Bushmills and Baileys.

Commenting, Barney McCann, Diageo NI said “Diageo is proud to work in partnership with the tourism and hospitality industry and we are committed to supporting and investing in Derry~Londonderry at this very exciting time.  We are all looking forward to the festival which is a perfect fit for the rich cultural heritage and history of Diageo’s global brands and I know the City will be a great host for the wide international audience that the event will attract. “With 2013 on the horizon this event is another good news story for the growth of tourism in Derry~Londonderry.   2012 is also an exciting year for the whole of Northern Ireland and through our involvement with a host of visitor events including this week’s Irish Open, we are working to build and grow momentum within our vibrant tourism and hospitality sector.
